Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause severe health outcomes when someone breathes it in over a prolonged period. Given how prevalent radon is in Utah, we’ve rounded up four facts every Utahn should know about the gas. (Radon Facts)
- Radon can’t be detected by our senses
Similar to carbon monoxide, radon can’t be smelled, seen, or tasted, which makes it particularly insidious. Radon can only be detected by specialized tests, which should be performed in every home in Utah every two years.
- Radon comes from Utah’s Uranium rich soil
Radon is created when uranium in the ground decays. Utah has uranium in all corners of the state, which means radon can be present in any home, office, school, or other building.
- Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, but radon is second in line. Because radon damages the DNA in your lungs, it causes around 21,000 deaths per year—and many people do not know they have lung cancer until the disease has significantly progressed.
- One in three Utah homes has high radon levels
It’s estimated that one in three Utah homes has a high radon level—and some data estimates half of Utah homes do. This is a major cause for concern, given that many people do not test their homes for radon on the recommended schedule.
